This little Red Squirrel in the video below is a native resident of the woods.

Red Squirrel numbers in Ireland have made a comeback in recent years. The introduction of Grey Squirrel into Ireland around 1911 played a massive part in the decline of our native Red Squirrel.

As I understand it, the Grey Squirrel out compete the Red Squirrel when it comes to food. They also carry a virus that can kill the Red Squirrel.

The Pine Marten is thought to be playing an important role in keeping the Grey Squirrel population under control, it is said that the Pine Marten also preys on the Red Squirrel but for whatever reason the Grey Squirrel is more susceptible.

Thankfully I have never seen a Grey Squirrel in my woods!
